Gender Review: Volume 3, May 1984-Summer 1985
This is the third and final volume of Gender Review.
In issue 4, Gender Review covered Ulane v. Eastern, in which the pilot Karen Ulane sued Eastern Airlines for firing her for being trans. The article received criticism from American trans activist Virginia Prince. Her letter was printed in issue no. 5.
Leslie M. Lothstein's book Female-to-Male Transsexualism is debated throughout this volume. Lothstein recommends psychotherapy for transness and surgery only as a last resort. Raj reviewed the book in issue no. 1 and found it "potentially damaging" as Lothstein pathologizes and invalidates the gender identity of transmen. In issue no. 5, Huxford defends Lothstein in her article on his book. There's also an article called "A Very Grimm Tale" by E. Sopp (likely a pseudonym for Huxford) which includes praise for Lothstein. Huxford also discusses the respective roles of psychotheraphy and surgery in transition in her articles "SRS - Experimental or Not?" (no. 1) and "Gender Dysphoria - A Mental Illness?" (no. 2). Both are reports on the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Gender Dysphoria in France in 1983.
Other highlights include:
- a brief article about trans prisoners by the executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Kingston (no. 1)
- FACT annual report and financial statements (no. 3)
- an article on depression (no. 4)
- a research questionnaire (no. 4)
- an article on phalloplasty (no. 5)
