Title A name given to the resource Richard Hudler (1942- ) Description An account of the resource Born in the United States in 1942, Richard Hudler is a social worker and an activist who has been working tirelessly to advocate for gay and lesbian rights since immigrating to Canada in 1971. Working for 5 years in Goderich as a counsellor for the Ontario ministry of Community and Social Services, Hudler moved to London Ontario where he pursued a career as a social worker, entering private practice in 1985. In 1980 Hudler joined the board of HALO, and starting in 1981, became the long serving board president. He represented HALO through the Project Guardian scandal with the local police, and in 1995 Hudler filed an official complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission against London Mayor Diane Haskett when she refused to issue a Gay Pride Proclamation. An early member of the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario, Hudler continues his activism through Queer Ontario, a provincial network of individuals — and their allies committed to questioning, challenging, and reforming the laws, institutional practices, and social norms that regulate queer people. He has a BA (Roosevelt University, 1965) and a Master in Social Work (Wilfred Laurier University, 1978). Title A name given to the resource Richard North (1951- ) & Chris Vogel (1947- ) Description An account of the resource In 1972 Chris Vogel and Rich North met at the University of Manitoba and together joined Gays for Equality (GFE). They tried to become legally married in 1974, however the church ceremony was disallowed by the Manitoba courts. In the mid-1970's Chris became treasurer of GFE, a position he has held in its successor organizations. During that time Rich worked organizing the National Gay Conference. It was at this conference that Winnipeg's first gay march and pride week took place. In the later 1970's and into the early 1990's Rich became involved in broadcasting, first with 'GaysWeek' on radio and later with 'Coming Out' on cable T.V. In 1982, on behalf of GFE, Rich and Chris founded the Oscar Wilde Memorial Society, a restaurant and bar located within Winnipeg's gay community centre. The funds generated by this enterprise helped fund Winnipeg's gay/lesbian health clinic, Manitoba's Gay/Lesbian Legal Defence Fund and several other groups and activities. Chris became its first Treasurer and, after twenty years, continues in that position. In addition Chris founded and continues to chair Manitoba's Gay and Lesbian Archive. Title A name given to the resource Rick Bébout (1950-2009) Description An account of the resource Rick Bébout, born in Massachusetts, came to Canada in 1969 - a draft-dodger in spirit at age 19 if, in the end, never drafted. But he had found the right town, Toronto, falling in with a crew of artsy queers who felt they could do anything. And, without credentials or permission, they did: in a burst of civic bravado, they conceived a book to celebrate Toronto's Union Station, and then they were threatened with demolition. It was published in 1972. In time, he connected with queers who - around the same time, also without credentials, no resources to speak of, and certainly no permission - had got together to publish their own paper. It was radical; he suspected himself not"politically correct" enough to help. But lending a hand at the (then) Canadian Gay Archives put him in their midst: in 1977 they asked him to join their collective. He gave The Body Politic his entire life (well, nearly) until the end of its life, in 1987. Many of that little rag's radicals - most notably Michael Lynch, Bill Lewis, Tim McCaskell, Chris Bearchell, Ed Jackson and Kevin Orr - went on to confront AIDS as they already had at The Body Politic. In 1986 Rick joined the staff of the AIDS Committee of Toronto - officially in fundraising if often caught up in AIDS education and community action. He left in 1993, worn out by battles to keep ACT true to its community roots and to keep an AIDS Service Organization from killing a person with AIDS, which by 1988 he knew he was (if never a "PWA" obsessed with Identity Politics). He has spent his time since looking back on a lucky life, in online works wondering what it means to be not just "Gay" - but a citizen committed to liberation for everyone.
