Title A name given to the resource Bernard Courte (1949-1991) Description An account of the resource Gay activist, educationalist and writer, Bernard Courte, was raised in Weir, Quebec, where he was told to 'speak white'. Bernard learned English out of necessity. This and an early traumatic experience with homophobia--the infamous 1977 raid on Truxx bar in Montreal--were defining elements in his life. As an adult, he fought tenaciously for the French language and for lesbian and gay rights, marching, writing, and speaking with an infectious enthusiasm and dynamic energy. Courte's first involvement with political activism was with the Association pour les Droits des Gais du Quebec where he gained experience as a writer for its paper, Le Berdache. In 1982 he moved to the new monthly, Sortie, which he soon edited. An early champion of AIDS awareness in Quebec, he wrote numerous articles on this issue for Sortie and RG, and also appeared frequently on radio and television. A recognized expert in language and education, Courte taught English as a second language in Quebec and worked for the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto from 1986. Here he focused on AIDS, education, and rights for Franco-Ontarians. He wrote frequently for educational and francophone journals, penned a column for Sortie until it folded and then for Xtra!. As his health began to decline, Courte seemed to pick up speed. In 1988 he created a francophone section within the new advocacy group, AIDS Action Now! and initiated the translation of its AIDS treatment data newsletter. He also started a French-language index of medical data relating to AIDS treatment, a resource unique in North America. He helped found a francophone AIDS support group in Toronto, organized safe-sex workshops, and was involved with nine AIDS conferences in six years. Bernard died of complications from AIDS in Toronto on 19 October 1991. Plus sa santé périclitait, plus il mettait les bouchées doubles. En 1988 il a créé une section francophone au sein du nouveau groupe de revendication, AIDS Action Now! et a commencé à traduire son bulletin sur le traitement du sida. Il a aussi entrepris de créer un index de langue française des données médicales sur le traitement du sida (une ressource unique en Amérique du Nord). Il a contribué à la fondation d'un groupe d'appui francophone aux gens atteints du sida à Toronto, il a organisé des ateliers sur le sécurisexe et il a été actif dans neuf conférences sur le sida en six ans. Title A name given to the resource Bev Lepischak (1953- ) Description An account of the resource Bev Lepischak was born in 1953 on a small farm in rural Manitoba, where she learned that hard work and careful nurturing could make things grow under even the harshest conditions. Bev studied Social Work at the University of Manitoba and worked in Churchill and Winnipeg where she also earned her credentials as a lesbian. Within a month of coming to Toronto in 1981, Bev began volunteering for the Toronto Counselling Centre for Lesbians and Gays where her natural leadership skills soon saw her becoming Chair of the Board. During the 1980’s and 90’s, she made her mark on every organization in which she was involved: Jessie’s Centre for Teenagers; WCREC; the Guelph Sexuality Conference; and especially Central Toronto Youth Services where she worked from 1993 to 2004. As a community development worker, Bev trained professionals and community groups throughout Ontario about the needs and issues of queer youth, coordinated the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Youth, organized two major “Other Young Lives” conferences, and supported countless other initiatives. Bev received many accolades over the years, including the Guelph University Lifetime Achievement Award for Sexuality Education in 1997 and the David Kelley Community Award in 2000, but her proudest achievement has been the creation of Supporting Our Youth (SOY). This program, which began in 1997, has been groundbreaking for its vision of queer community building across the generations, its range of cultural, recreational and mentoring activities, and its ability to evolve to meet new challenges. Now part of Sherbourne Health Centre, SOY supports some 20 unique initiatives including projects focused on newcomer and black queer youth, trans youth, and queer youth with disabilities. Bev’s private life mirrors her passionate and nurturing spirit as much as her public life. She met her soulmate, Anna Travers, in the mid-eighties and welcomed the chance to co-parent two little girls. Bev’s home is her refuge – a place to cook, garden and, of course, to gather people in.
