Title A name given to the resource Susan Ursel (1958 - ) Description An account of the resource Susan Ursel is a lawyer working in the areas of labour and human rights. She represents trade unions, individuals and other progressive organizations. Her parents were both from Saskatchewan. She credits this Prairie heritage and the strong women of her family for her stamina, stubbornness and passion for fairness. Susan has been involved in the lesbian and gay community for many years, as a lawyer and an activist. In 1994, she was the Lobby Coordinator for the Campaign for Equal Families, working for passage of Ontario's Bill 167, the first same-sex relationship recognition legislation to be introduced in a Canadian legislature. She was a founder and is a director of the Foundation for Equal Families which continues this work, most recently with its legal challenge to Federal legislation which discriminates against same-sex partners. This effort has culminated in the introduction Bill C-23, the Federal response to ending discrimination against our relationships. She has successfully advocated for gay and lesbian equality in a number of human rights cases, including the first Gay Pride proclamation case in Hamilton. She has appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada as co-counsel for the Metropolitan Community Church-Toronto, in the groundbreaking Charter case, Egan and Nesbitt. Living in Toronto with her partner Lucy McSweeney, she continues to speak, write and work on equity issues. Title A name given to the resource Delwin Vriend (1967 - ) Description An account of the resource Delwin Vriend was fired from his laboratory coordinator job with the Christian King's College in Edmonton in January 1991 after confirming that he was gay. Vriend was unable to complain through the Alberta Human Rights Commission since the Alberta Human Rights Code does not prohibit discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Delwin challenged the act's constitutionality all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada and won after seven years. Delwin's victory represented a victory for every gay and lesbian in this country. The photograph of Delwin and his partner Andrew Gagnon, kissing in front of a crowd celebrating the Supreme Court decision, has become one of the icons in the growing treasury of lesbian and gay legal and civic victories. Title A name given to the resource Tom Warner (1952 - ) Description An account of the resource In 1971, Tom Warner helped found the Gay Students' Alliance at the University of Saskatchewan and the Zodiac Friendship Society, the community organization that later became the Gay Community Centre of Saskatoon. After moving to Toronto, he helped found the Gay Alliance Toward Equality in 1973, later becoming its President, and co-ordinated the National Gay Election Coalition in 1974. He is also a founding member of the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario, in which he has been active since 1975. Other organizations in which Tom has been active include: the Body Politic, the Committee to Defend John Damien, the Right To Privacy Committee, the Coalition for Life Together, the Association of Gay Electors and the June 13 Committee. From 1993 to 1996, Tom served as an Ontario Human Rights Commissioner, becoming the first openly gay man in Canada to be appointed to a statutory human rights commission. In 2001, he was included as one of some 40 Canadians in Who's Who in Contemporary Gay & Lesbian History, along with over 500 figures significant to the history of homosexuality in the Western world from World War II to the present. Tom is the author of Never Going Back, a history of queer activism in Canada, published by the University of Toronto Press in 2002. Title A name given to the resource Douglas Wilson (1950 - 1992) Description An account of the resource Canadian activist, university professor, publisher and writer was born in Saskatchewan. In 1975, he gained prominence in a fight for gay rights with the University of Saskatchewan. The University's Dean of the College of Education refused to allow Wilson into the school system to supervise practice teachers because of his public involvement with the gay liberation movement. Wilson was Vice-President of the Gay Community Centre Saskatoon and had been trying to start a gay academic union at the university. The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission failed to protect Wilson and his case was unsuccessful. Wilson spent most of his life fighting for human rights issues, activism and AIDS organizations. In 1977 he founded Stubblejumper Press, a press dedicated to publishing works by Canadian lesbians and gay men. He served as executive director of the Saskatchewan Association on Human Rights from 1978 to 1983. In 1983 Wilson moved to Toronto to work for the Toronto Board of Education as an adviser to the Race Relations and Equal Opportunity Office. In 1984, he became one of the founding publishers of Rites: For Lesbian and Gay Liberation. Wilson was the first openly gay candidate to be nominated by a major political party to stand for Parliament representing the NDP in the riding of Rosedale. During the campaign he was diagnosed with AIDS. He spent the rest of his life as an AIDS activist helping to found AIDS Action Now! And founding chairperson of the Canadian Network of Organizations for People Living With AIDS. Wilson published his partner's novels, Boys Like Us (1991) and Sweetheart (1992) by Peter McGehee. One month before his death, he completed McGehee's notes of his third novel, Labour of Love (1993).
