Title A name given to the resource John Alan Lee (1933-2013) Description An account of the resource John was born in Maxville, Ontario but was a Torontonian since his boyhood days. John’s contribution to our gay and lesbian heritage spanned four decades and encompassed many roles. He was a pioneering activist, a tireless organizer, an inspiring writer, an out teacher, a dedicated volunteer and an articulate spokesperson for the community at a time when ‘going public’ was rife with risk. In the sixties John published articles in the early Toronto gay periodical TWO and was the “gay sociologist” published in the Toronto Telegram, protesting their coverage of the gay “sick world”. He was the first Canadian professional to come out publicly on TV (The Judy LaMarsh Show, Valentine’s Day 1974) John organized and was the first chair of the Gay Academic Union in 1975. Later the group changed its name to LGAS and ran programs at the U of T for the next decade . A Quaker, he had civil disobedience training, and organized a successful gay sit-in of the chief law officer of Ontario, and a gay Kiss-in in the Ontario Legislature . Following the notorious 1981 Toronto bathhouse raids, John served as chair of the Right to Privacy Committee. For four decades John was a prolific author of books ands scholarly articles on gay life. His works brought discussion of gay and lesbian issues to the forefront of mainstream media. He published nine books and more than three hundred articles, and appeared more than fifty times on television. His works range from The Colours of Love (A Psychology Today book) published in 1976, to his autobiographical Love’s Gay Fool (www.johnalanlee.ca) John ran for office in Canada’s Parliament, and served on the executive of many organizations including trade union and socialist groups, anti-war movements, the Canadian Sierra Club, and the local Amnesty International. He retired from the University of Toronto where he was a professor of sociology. In personal life, John followed the advice of the ancient Greek poet, Homer: “Let love be the business of our lives.” (2005 Induction Statement) Né à Maxville (Ontario), John vit à Toronto depuis son enfance. Title A name given to the resource John Duggan (1949- ) Description An account of the resource John Duggan grew up on an Ontario farm, moved to Ottawa in 1970 and became involved in Gays of Ottawa (GO) in 1974. At GO, John worked tirelessly on the peer-counselling, public education, and political action committees; wrote for GO’s newspaper ( GO Info); helped develop a cable TV show, and organized social activities. In 1979 and 1980, John served as GO’s President and was active in GO’s participation in the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO) and in GO’s role as coordinating office of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Rights Coalition (CLGRC). Over a ten year period, John’s significant contribution to GO’s policies and debates made it one of the most influential voices in the country. He was instrumental in creating effective media strategies to advance our struggle for rights, to reach individual lesbians and gay men, and to promote the concept of lesbians and gay men as a minority community. John’s very public profile greatly contributed to GO’s high credibility. After a fire destroyed GO’s offices in 1979, John spearheaded the drive to establish a community centre. It opened in 1980 and allowed for increased community events, social activities and activism. In 1982, with partial funding from the City of Ottawa, John became the first full-time employee of a gay and lesbian organization in Canada. For the next two years, John did some of his most valuable organizational work, including the early planning and development of a strategic response to AIDS. John helped create Ottawa’s first gay registered charity, Pink Triangle Services (PTS). With the creation of PTS, GO’s educational and social services became a separate entity and eventually the GLBT organization that continues to provide services to this day. John was also a founding member of Ottawa’s Abiwin Housing Co-op, one of the first co-ops to provide safe housing for lesbians and gay men. John Duggan was, undoubtedly, one of the most influential individuals in the early gay liberation movement in Canada. As John himself says: “For ten years, my life revolved around gay liberation. It was intense and totally exhausting, but very exciting and enriching.” (2005 Induction Statement) John Duggan grandit sur une ferme en Ontario, s’installe à Ottawa en 1970 et s’engage auprès des Gais de l’Outaouais (GO) en 1974. Title A name given to the resource John Fisher (1966- ) Description An account of the resource John Fisher is Executive Director of EGALE (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere). John holds the degrees of B.A., LL.B. (Hons) (Auck.) and LL.M. (Queen's), where he wrote his thesis on lesbian and gay rights under international law. He also teaches a course at the University of Ottawa on Lesbian and Gay Legal Issues, and a course at the University of Carleton on Lesbian and Gay Issues under the Canadian Charter of Rights. In his work with EGALE, he has travelled by plane, train, bus and car to every province and territory of Canada to build a national action presence for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people. John has testified before numerous Parliamentary and Senate Committees, most recently before the House of Commons and Senate on Bill C-23, the federal omnibus legislation to recognize same-sex relationships. John has been called by the Canadian Human Rights Commission to testify as a witness on same-sex equality rights, and has co-presented on lesbian and gay issues at education workshops organized by the National Judicial Institute for Ontario Court judges. He has presented at numerous workshops and conferences on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered equality rights. John Fisher was Grand Marshall of the Toronto Pride Parade in 1998 and has represented EGALE at a number of international human rights conferences, including speaking before the plenary assembly of the United Nations World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna. He was presented with a "Heroes Award" by the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto in 1996, was named "Gay Activist of the Year" by Capital Xtra in 2000.
