An account of the resource
The Foolscap Oral History Project, also known as the Toronto Gay History Project, was undertaken by John Grube and Ed Jackson in order to collect and preserve histories of everyday gay life and social culture in Toronto. The project produced a collection of 42 interviews on 52 cassette tapes that provide a rich picture of the lives and histories of men in Grube and Jackson's social circle.
Interviews took place from 1981-1987, and cover gay life in Toronto from the 1940s until that time. Topics include the men's early life, coming out, relationships, friendships, sex lives, careers, military service, community organizing, political actions, religion, bar culture, and experiences with psychiatry.
The tapes and transcripts comprising the Foolscap Project were donated to the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives in 2016, and are currently being processed by the LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory.

In this oral history interview, Phil Conron, 53 years old, discusses growing up in Toronto in the 1940s, trying to fit in with other boys in school, and early adolescent sexual experiences with other young men. He discusses his involvement with the gay social scene in Toronto in the 1950s and 60s, touching on topics that include cruising in Queen’s Park, going to parties and other gay social spaces on Toronto Island, bar culture, group sex parties, bath houses, police harassment, and a brief stint living in Vancouver in the late 1950s. Conron had long-term relationships with several men, which he outlines in brief. He also discusses his developing taste, later in life, for intergenerational relationships with young men in their early 20s. Conron briefly discusses his career, which is not identified in specific terms, and his growing participation as an actor in community theatre after his retirement.

Richard Fung is an academic, writer, video maker, and has been involved in gay and queer activism for the past thirty years, including founding the group Gay Asians of Toronto in 1979. In 1984, Fung shot Orientations, a film that focused on gay and lesbian Asians, responding to the lack of representation of people of colour in activism and organizing. Rex versus Singh was an experimental film that looked at a speculative history around a real-life case of the crown versus a Sikh man, questioning how the intersections of race and homophobia played out. Fung discusses the value behind the fluidity of queer liberation.

Syrus Marcus Ware is an artist and activist. Ware is involved with Blackness Yes! that puts on Blockorama every year, which looks at Queer and Trans Liberation from a Black queer perspective and remains a place of resistance at Pride Toronto. In 2003, Ware founded Prisoner's Action Justice Committee, looking at the experiences of queer and trans people in the prison system. Ware urges us to remember important details of diversity from our past.

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Queer Liberation Theory Project seeks to advance the public education and community development work being done in the name of Queer Liberation by resurrecting the principles of the historical Gay Liberation Movement, re-contextualizing them within contemporary queer discourse, translating the findings in theoretical terms, and disseminating them through various accessible multimedia platforms.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ontario-based activists, academics and artists who engage in queer liberation theory and activism have been interviewed and an oral discussion and feature documentary created for public education and queer community development purposes. </span></p>

Tim McCaskell is a self-described gay dinosaur. He was a member of the Body Politic Collective, the Public Action Committee after the Toronto bathhouse raids in the 1980s and was a founding member of AIDS Action Now. McCaskell has also been active with Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA). McCaskell makes a distinction between equity and equality in doing liberation work.
