Title

Nicole Brossard (1943- )

Description

Nicole Brossard is a poet, novelist and theorist. Born in Montreal, she has been a leading figure in post-modern writing since 1965, ensuring that issues of gender and language are now central within Quebec's poetic landscape. Internationally, her reputation as an artist and a lesbian theorist has grown with the multilingual translation of her work, including: Lovhers, Picture Theory, Mauve Desert, Under Tongue, The Aerial Letter, and Baroque at Dawn.

"Tolerance is a social must that has to be learned culturally or strongly recommended by law. Because tolerance is not acceptance it could be defined as an attitude by which people temporarily put aside public rejection, discrimination and contempt toward a category of individuals or a group. Tolerance is unreliable because it fluctuates like fashion and the stock market. There is not such a thing as 'safe' tolerance." (Nicole Brossard, Montreal, 2000 Induction Statement)

Poète, romancière et théoricienne née à Montréal, cette figure marquante de l’écriture postmoderne depuis 1965 a intégré le genre et la langue au cœur de la poétique québécoise.
