Description
Born in 1951 in Aylmer, Quebec, David Kelley began working for the Ottawa Youth Services Bureau upon graduation from Carleton University in 1972. It was at the bureau, in 1977, that he met Tom Stewart, the man who would be his life partner for 19 years. Upon moving to Toronto, David worked professionally with a myriad of organizations, including Central Toronto Youth Services, the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Ministry of Health's AIDS Bureau, and the People With AIDS Foundation (where he spent a year as Executive Director).
As a volunteer he was an integral part of a staggering number of organizations, both as a founder and participant: Coalition for Services for Gay and Lesbian Youth, Gays and Lesbians in Health Care, Toronto Area Gays and Lesbians, the HIV Mental Health Group, the United Way, AIDS Committee of Toronto, and Positive Youth Outreach. With Tom, he founded a Gay Men's Couples Support Group, and a Gay & Lesbian Bridge Players Group. As a volunteer with the Lesbian Gay Community Appeal, he was an early supporter of the Appeal's Fruit Cocktail productions, and performed in four of those productions as The Apple.
David Douglas Kelley died of AIDS on April 25, 1996. In keeping with his generosity and unrelenting support to the community, he bequeathed money to the Toronto Counseling Centre for Lesbians & Gays, which merged with the Toronto Family Services Association, and now offers services to the gay, lesbian and HIV communities known as the David Kelley Program. It is a wonderful and fitting tribute to his life and work.
Né en 1951 à Aylmer (Québec), David Kelley a commencé à travailler pour le Bureau des services à la jeunesse d'Ottawa après l'obtention de son diplôme de l'Université Carleton en 1972. C'est à ce Bureau, en 1977, qu'il a rencontré Tom Stewart, l'homme qui devait devenir son partenaire pendant 19 ans. Une fois installé à Toronto, David a œuvré de façon professionnelle auprès d'organismes tels que Central Toronto Youth Services, le ministère des Services sociaux et communautaires, le Bureau du SIDA du ministère de la Santé et la Fondation de People With AIDS (où il fut directeur général pendant un an).
En tant que bénévole, il a été intimement associé à une foule d'organismes, soit comme fondateur, soit comme participant, notamment : Coalition for Services for Gay and Lesbian Youth, Gays and Lesbians in Health Care, Toronto Area Gays and Lesbians, HIV Mental Health Group, Centraide, Comité du sida de Toronto et Positive Youth Outreach. Avec Tom, il a fondé un groupe d'appui pour les couples gais et un groupe de gais et lesbiennes jouant au bridge. Son rôle de bénévole auprès de Lesbian Gay Community Appeal l'a amené à appuyer dès ses débuts les productions d'Appeal's Fruit Cocktail et à jouer le rôle de La Pomme dans quatre de ces productions.
David Douglas Kelley est mort du sida le 25 avril 1996. Conformément à sa générosité et à son appui continu à la communauté, il a laissé une somme d'argent au Toronto Counseling Centre for Lesbians & Gays, qui a fusionné avec Toronto Family Services Association et qui offre maintenant des services aux communautés de gais, lesbiennes et personnes atteintes du VIH. Ces services portent le nom de Programme David Kelley, un hommage bien mérité qui souligne sa vie et son œuvre. (2003 Déclaration d’Induction)
