Description
Struck by a bolt from the blue when she was 11 in the form of a ginger-haired girl in her class in Chesterfield - she was in love. A process which has brought much pleasure since and more hard work than she anticipated.
The struggle to know and not to know at the same time, then to put the unthinkable into words, left her with the strong feeling that no youngster should have to pick or hack their way through this thicket ever again.
In England, she worked with Cambridge Women’s Liberation, the counselling organization Friend, and a variety of gay and women’s groups. She initiated the Cambridge Lesbian Line and was on the national executive of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
Falling in love yet again, she came to Canada in 1980 and has worked with the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO) ever since. She also volunteered with the Toronto Lesbian Phone Line and assorted other groups and worked at York U with the status of women, employment equity, and the women’s studies library. She has published two books of poems and various articles.
What keeps her going: the strong feeling, undiminished, that things have got to change. What makes it possible: women. (2005 Induction Statement)
À l’âge de 11 ans, elle est frappée par un éclair qui prend la forme d’une écolière dans son école de Chesterfield. Elle n’a pas de paratonnerre; elle devient amoureuse. Depuis, il y a eu beaucoup de satisfaction… et de dur travail.
La lutte pour savoir et, en même temps, ne pas savoir. Puis mettre des mots sur l’impensable. Voilà une expérience concluante : aucun jeune ne devrait avoir à subir ce genre de vacuum.
En Angleterre, elle travaille avec Cambridge Women’s Liberation, l’organisme de counselling Friend et une variété de groupes gais et féministes. Elle crée Cambridge Lesbian Line et siège au comité exécutif de Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
Elle devient de nouveau amoureuse et déménage au Canada en 1980. Elle n’a jamais cessé de militer au sein de la Coalition pour les droits des gais et des lesbiennes de l’Ontario. Elle fait du bénévolat auprès de Toronto Lesbian Line et de groupes semblables. À l’Université York, elle travaille pour le statut de la femme, l’équité en emploi et la bibliothèque des études féminines. Elle a publié deux recueils de poésie et divers articles.
Son carburant demeure un profond sentiment, toujours entier, que les choses doivent changer. Et qu'est-ce qui rend cela possible? Les femmes. (2005 Déclaration d’Induction)
