Title
Jane Rule (1931-2007)
Description
A torch-bearer for several generations of lesbian writers and activists, Jane Rule has written 12 critically acclaimed books and created a legacy of active engagement in the pursuit of lesbian and gay rights. Her beautifully crafted, pioneering first novel, Desert of the Heart (1964), was written before the formation of a gay liberation movement.
Jane Rule, who has seen her own book, The Young in One Anothers Arms, seized by customs officials, is an outspoken opponent of censorship. Among many causes, she has supported The Body Politic and Little Sisters bookstore in their battles with censors. Her life and work have been honoured in an inspiring and moving film by Lynne Fernie and Aerlyn Weissman, Fiction and Other Truths: A Film About Jane Rule. (1998 Induction Statement)
Jane Rule died at her home on Galiano Island, B.C., November 28, 2007. She was 76.
Militante, auteure de 12 livres primés par la critique, y compris son premier roman pionnier, Desert of the Heart (1964), écrit avant le début du mouvement de libération homosexuelle.
