Mary Meigs (1917-2002)

Mary Meigs was born in Philadelphia in 1917 and grew up in Washington, D.C. She obtained a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in 1939, where she became an instructor in English and creative writing. As a writer, she is best known for The Medusa Head (which chronicled a stormy, three-way lesbian relationship involving herself, her long-time lover Marie Claire Blais, and an unidentified woman), Lily Briscoe: A Self Portrait and In the Company of Strangers, for which she won the QSPELL Award. In the Company of Strangers recounts her experience as a cast member in the National Film Board's production of the same-titled film; it is also a perceptive meditation on time and relationships written by someone who has known both. A visual artist as well as a writer, Ms. Meigs studied painting at the Art Students' League from 1945-47 and has had one-woman shows in Boston, New York, Paris and Montreal. She lived in Montreal, surrounded by the art which she has created and her garden, another of her passions. (2002 Induction Statement)
